Board Info Session

We've already passed the first half of the academic year, which means it's time to search for new board members! 🔎A new board will be installed in September, but of course, doing a board year is not something you just do out of the blue, that's why the board has organized an info session for you! ℹ️

During this info session, the board will explain several things: explanation of the board in general, explanations of the different functions, and the experiences of the current and old board. At the end, there will be some time for questions.
If you cannot attend the info session but still would like to have the slides of the presentation, then send an email to secretary@dsapattern.nl.

In March, the board will organize a Q&A session to ask all the questions you have and an informal drink to talk to all (old) board members individually. More information about this will follow.

Pattern Weekend 2019

Calling all superheroes!

We are delighted to announce the second Pattern Weekend, with the theme superheroes! This year the event will take place again in W'tjewel, Eersel, from 29/11 to 1/12.

The weekend will be a great opportunity for you to socialize with your fellow Data Science students at the activities during the day and parties at night :D. We will, of course, have our infamous cantus on Friday night, and we’ll make sure you waken up by the sweet voice of our one and only Daan ‘Dudu Dudu’ Vijselaar. Sadly, like last year, there will (probably) be a lack of pillows again.
Buy your tickets (€40) quickly, since we only have 70 places at the camp! Ticket sales will close on November 10th.

P.S. If you have any questions, feel free to send a WhatsApp or mail to the D.S.A. Pattern Weekend Committee (weekend@dsapattern.nl)

More info about the Night Talk:
Novel insights from behavioral science and data science are actively used to understand, and influence, the online behavior of consumers. In this talk prof. dr. Maurits Kaptein will detail the pervasive practice of persuasion profiling.
By examining the click-stream of consumers, computers can learn which sales arguments make an individual customer 'tick'. The talk will briefly cover the necessary behavioral science insights and subsequently focus on the data science methods used to personalize e-commerce offers at large scale and there will be sufficient time for questions and reflection.

Business Data Challenge

Do you want to get in touch with 3 interesting companies while having the opportunity to win a big prize?

On the 10th of May it is finally time for a new and exciting event Tilburg University has to offer, the Business Data Challenge!

The Business Data Challenge is a new initiative from Tilburg University organized for Master students Information Management and Data Science & Society. The aim of this event is to allow you to convert the theory and knowledge you gained during your study into practice and go for the extra mile! Collaboration, mutual learning, the application of knowledge and innovative solution-oriented thinking are central to this.

Information Management and Data Science are both fields of study that have been growing rapidly in recent years. This is mainly due to an increase in technological developments and the obtainment of new insights from data analysis via various tools. While the Information Manager ensures that the information systems are aligned with the business strategy, the average Data Scientist is concerned with analyzing data in order to optimize the business processes.

By combining these two aspects, Tilburg University wants to challenge you to enter the Business Data Challenge. Throughout the day, you will need to complete an extensive case offered by one of the three participating companies. You will have to go through various “Milestones” in order to arrive at the best end result. The final result will be judged by a professional jury and the winning team will receive a cheque of €600-! The day will end with a dinner and an informal drink. The entire day/event will be totally free of charge!

Participating companies:

Accenture
Vanderlande
Atos

Programme of the day

08:30 - 09:00 Arrival + Registrations
09:00 - 09:45 Introduction of the companies

SIMON Lunch Lecture

We are SIMON, a smallish independent AI-only company based in Eindhoven. Our mission: to accelerate deployment of machine learning and deep learning in Europe. We specialize in taking the latest tools, platforms, and research to actually build a working product (not just a prototype!) within months. We’ll explain what we do, how we do it and who we do it with: You’ll hear from the founder (dr. Erik van Breusegem), and a Data Scientist (Moira Berens).

So if you want to know how to solve (part of) our traffic jams, what you’ll actually do when you (sort of) grow up and what it actually means to work in what you (kind of) are studying for, join us for the talk. If you don’t want to know, there still will be that thing called a free lunch.

Become an Active Member!

New committees are starting, apply now!

As you might (or should) know, the intro period will be happening in August, for this, we need your help! Also, two other new committees are starting: the Symposium and Acquisition Committees.
Companies appreciate it a lot that besides your studies you’ve been an active student. Not only is a position in a committee a great addition to your CV, it’s a lot of fun as well! Scroll down to read about every committee of Pattern and click on the link to apply!
Application deadline is February 10! Questions? Send an email to secretary@dsapattern.nl.

The Intro Week Committee (IWC) organizes the whole Introduction Week (in Eindhoven mainly). This includes: setting up an original Data Science business case (with a company), organizing a grand Pattern party, arranging a demo lecture with the coolest professor, devising the infamous crazy88 challenges, fixing t-shirts (with sponsors) for all the 1st years, arranging dinner(s), finding enough intro mommies and daddies for both Eindhoven and Tilburg, and also finding volunteers to help during the week itself.

The Intro Camp Committee (ICC) is responsible for the Intro Camp for the future 1st year bachelor Data Science students. Some examples of the committee's tasks are: arranging the info sessions at the beginning of the camp, arranging busses to travel between the universities and the accommodation, organizing fun activities at the camp (e.g. party, cantus, get to know each other games), organizing a formal event (e.g. business case), arranging food and drinks for the whole camp, and finding volunteers to help during the Intro Camp.

The Symposium Committee (SC) will organize one or multiple symposia with a certain topic. Pattern's first symposium was organized in collaboration with Magister JFT | E-law (law association, specifically for the master Law and Technology) and was about the overlap between Data Science and Law, hence the name Law meets Data Science . Tasks of this committee will include: thinking of a interesting topic, possible collaborating with another association and/ or company, finding a suitable location, finding speakers, promoting the event, finding sponsors, and arranging food and drinks.

The Acquisition Committee (AqCo) will be responsible for finding new sponsors and partners for Pattern, in collaboration with the External Affairs Officer (Michael) and Treasurer (Robin). The committee will contact companies, if a company is interested in a partnership, a meeting will be planned with the company, Michael or Robin, and you. Then a deal needs to be made and a contract needs to be signed. If a company wants to do a lunch lecture, the committee needs to find a date, time, location, arrange food, and do promotion. The idea is that you, as a committee member, will do the whole process from contacting a company to actually organzing a career event. *NOTE* this is a completely new commitee and will be set up as a pilot to see if it works out.

The Activity Committee (AC) organizes informal events, such as parties, several informal drinks, game nights, a cantus and other fun activities.

The Education Committee (EC) is responsible for supporting all Data Science students with their education. This includes complaint handling, book discounts, study sessions, panel meetings, course evaluations, and tutorships.

The Promotion Committee (PC) is mainly responsible for promoting Pattern in general. A few of its tasks include designing and selling merchandise, keeping up and stepping up our social media game, designing a Pattern house style and creating the monthly newsletter.
The IT committee (ITC) is responsible for the maintenance of our website and web shop. Besides that, they also work on making sure that our servers are all well protected and that we are in coherence with the data protection law. *NOTE* We highly value applications with previous experience in web development, however, this is not a requirement.

The First Years’ Committee (FYC) is similar to the AC but only first year students are allowed in this committee. The FYC or free to organize different kinds of activities. First year students that have no idea which committee to join, this might be the committee for you!
Bartending at Hubble, this is not a committee! This speaks for itself, you will never have to bartend if you're not available or don't want to. If you just want to do it once, that's fine as well.
