Machine Learning in Transport Planning

We are looking for a graduate student that wants to optimize our world! We have an exciting graduation project that offers a unique opportunity to dive deep into the realm of transport planning within the manufacturing sector.

In this assignment, you will tackle the critical task of creating a comprehensive locomotive transport plan for one of our esteemed manufacturing clients. Key factors to consider include:

  • Resource availability
  • Optimal selection of wagon types
  • Travel times for individual routes

However, the true challenge lies in understanding how these factors interact and change when combined. To address this challenge, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of solution methods. You are free to determine your own solution method, but techniques that might be relevant are:

  • Supervised machine learning, as it will prove valuable in learning from historical data, extracting meaningful patterns, and identifying trends that can inform your decision-making process.
  • Reinforcement learning approaches: they will allow you to propose solid schedules that adapt and evolve based on real-time information, ensuring efficiency in dynamic scenarios.
  • Additionally, incorporating uncertainty modeling techniques will help assess the robustness of your proposed methods when implemented in actual production settings.

This assignment is a unique chance to apply your expertise in econometrics, data science, industrial engineering, or mathematics to real-world challenges in transport planning. You will have the opportunity to delve into cutting-edge methodologies and contribute to the development of an innovative solution.

Who are you

  • You are a master student in Operations Research, Econometrics, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering or another related field and looking for a graduation project
  • You have experience with data science and machine learning
  • You are interested in the manufacturing and logistics sector
  • You are currently living in the Netherlands, studying at a Dutch University, and communicate fluently in English, verbally and in writing. A good command of Dutch is a plus
  • You are available for a minimum of six months to a maximum of 9 months
